WP 4 – Recommendations for Independent Accident Investigation

Problem to be tackled

There is a lack of legal framework for public traffic accident safety investigation.

 

Main goal

Formulate recommendations on organisational and institutional aspects of road accident investigation.

 

Main method

Review of the existing legal framework and international standards in all transport modes. Overview of the existing public and private investigation practices for road accidents.

 

Important subjects

Independence of the investigation body. Transparency of the investigation practices and the resulting data, accident reports or statistical data. Formulation of best practice recommendations for in-depth road accident investigation.

 

Current status

The overview of existing public and private investigation practices for road accidents in partner countries has been made. Draft Recommendations on Transparent and Independent Accident Investigation will shortly be published.

 

Products so far

Deliverable D4.1 Bibliographical analysis. (A review of the existing legal framework and international standards in different transport modes.)

Deliverable D4.2 Database Transparency. (A review of the public European and national road accident databases.)

 

Future plans

After the publication of Deliverable D4.3, Draft recommendations on Transparent and Independent Accident Investigation—A Working Paper, feedback will be gathered from road safety specialists and policy-makers.
